Dear Miss Daisy

I think I am in love with the gorgeous gelding in the other pasture but the ugly mean gelding I live with won’t let me meet him?  What is a mare to do?

Dear Anonymous Mare;

I have learned as a young filly that the easiest way to get the attention of a prospective mate is by adding some charm.  First be bold and let the one in your pasture know without any doubt you are clearly NOT interested in him.  Then try a bit of trotting, swishing your tail and if that doesn’t bring him to the fence call out to him.  Some geldings are slow to realize they are being flirted with.  You can bring a treat such as a shared carrot to the fence as an offering of your affections.   If all of this fails go for the old fashioned method of needing his help.  No gelding that is worth his tail would turn away from a mare in need of assistance.  Be creative, flirty and have some fun with this.

If this doesn’t work you might consider ways to “get over” your infatuation.  This might mean moving away from that fence line putting more distance between you and the neighbor.  Including obstacles and or toys to play with in your area also helps pass the time and works as a good distraction.

Happy Flirting – Miss Daisy
